Annual Conference

Many studies have predicted that two thirds of existing jobs will be replaced by Artificial Intelligence (AI) in 10 to 15 years. How will this make an influence to our future leaders?

Confronting global changes on life and work environment, it is crucial to equip young people in grasping a good self-understanding and learning transferable skills for their roles in future life and career. However, are the traditional definitions of “work”, “talent” and “success” still applicable for encouraging young people to positively respond to challenges in career and life? What are the qualities of career and life planning and community atmosphere required for benefiting youth’s sustainable multiple-pathway development?

This conference hopes to gather people from different sectors, including business, parents, youth, government, education and welfare, for a discussion on the imagination and challenges on career and life planning in the 21st century. A cross-sectoral collaboration model is expected to be constructed based on the joint approach among all these sectors. We will also summarize the practical experience of the past three years of the project. Good practice intervention approaches and wisdoms, practical experience in the support of young people related to various stakeholders, and the positive synergies created by the collaboration are to be shared with the audience through keynote speeches, youth-led experiential activities and paper presentations, etc. We are targeting to promote a meaningful engagement on career and life planning in both school and community settings.

Mini-Musical "Miss Cool Switches Jobs"

A series of comedic events focused around the popular and endearing Miss Cool. As a 10A public exam achiever years ago, Miss Cool was full of confidence when she went for a job interview at Honest Enterprise, believing that she could not fail due to her expansive knowledge, grasp of eight languages, possession of a mathematical brain and the ability to sweet talk to her bosses. Alas, the world has changed and Miss Cool faced the cold hard truth. She realised she never had aspirations or fully understood herself; never discovered her positive attributes and failed to ascertain her own values, attitudes, skills and knowledge. In short, Miss Cool, who has always believed that she was superior above others, was actually living an unrealistic and soulless life. The 21st century being the age of possibilities and challenges is therefore the time to start your career and life planning; believing that your life is in your own hands and every one of us should try to better discover our own talents and cherish each and every opportunity which could lead to unimaginable possibilities.

Abstract

Prof. Johanna WYN
Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor, Youth Research Centre, Melbourne Graduate School of Education, The University of Melbourne

Johanna Wyn is a Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor in the Youth Research Centre and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences Australia and the Academy of Social Sciences, UK.

She is engaged in multidisciplinary and multi-method research on the ways in which young people navigate their lives in a changing world, with a focus on the areas of transition, gender, wellbeing and inequality. Her work recognises that young people are active citizens, cultural creators and active agents in learning and wellbeing. She leads the ARC funded Life Patterns longitudinal research program and has a strong research track record of competitive research grants and consultancies and tenders from a range of stakeholders, including government departments, foundations and the private sector.

Social change on a global scale has impacted dramatically on the life and career trajectories of young people. Many are likely to be living very different lives from their parents a generation earlier. Professor Wyn’s talk explores the implications of these changes for young people and those who work with them. Significant structural changes include the increased importance of educational qualifications; the spread of precarious work; the tightening of social security measures and the emergence of new categories such as the over- qualified and the under-employed. Many researchers point to a ‘crisis’ for youth, and a ‘scarring’ effect of high levels of youth unemployment and under-employment that will impact on their futures. Wyn argues that these developments call for a strengthening of structural and social support measures for life and career development, drawing on examples of practices in Australia and the Asian region.

Abstract

Dr. John LIPTAK
Associate Director/ Career Coach, Center for Career and Talent Development, Radford University

John J. Liptak is Associate Director of the Center for Career & Talent Development at Radford University.  In addition, John is the President of the Center for Career Assessment, Inc., and founder of the Leisure2Work Institute. He conducts research on the effects of leisure on career development, developed a career counseling theory called the Leisure Theory of Career Development, and teaches application of the theory in workshops titled Leisure2Work.  John has written twenty books, 100 workbooks, and 35 assessments.  He appeared on MSNBC, CNN Radio, and as the leisure-to-work specialist on the television show “Success Without a College Degree.”

Leisure is the most overlooked, underutilized and unappreciated aspect of a career.  The Leisure Theory of Career Development (LTCD) offers a comprehensive approach for understanding how important leisure is in a career, and how leisure-based interventions can be leveraged to help youth make important career decisions, explore potential career paths, and create options and opportunities in their careers.  The Leisure Theory provides youth with access to transferrable skills that can easily be applied to educational opportunities, employment, and entrepreneurship.  Career counselors are quickly recognizing the impact that leisure can have on a career and are searching for ways to utilize leisure-time pursuits as a way of providing youth with many more opportunities and career options.  For many youth, leisure can be as important, or even more important than work in developing a career.

Abstract

Prof. Victor WONG
Principal Investigator (Community), CLAP for Youth @ JC; Professor & Bachelor of Social Work (Hons) Programme Director, Hong Kong Baptist University

Victor Wong is Professor and Programme Director of the BSW (Hons) Programme at the Department of Social Work, Hong Kong Baptist University.  He has long been serving as a social work subject specialist of the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic & Vocational Qualifications, and as a local academic member appointed by the Social Workers Registration Board in Hong Kong for undertaking validation exercises. His research interests and publications encompass different areas including social work education, youth studies and career interventions, health interventions and reforms in Hong Kong and China, and narrative and empowerment approaches to working with youth.

To start where young people are, an expanded notion of work and work experience is used as a perspective to provide them an enabling environment for workplace learning, where they can have their knowledge, skills, and attitudes recognized, developed, and reviewed for their search of values, and their aspirations for meaningful engagement, both inside out and outside in. Through the use of cases and research findings, it is argued that capturing values, attitudes, skills and knowledge drawn from a spectrum of paid and unpaid work experience is considered strategic for enhancing the life-career development of youth.

Abstract

Prof. Alvin LEUNG Seung Ming
Chief Principal Investigator, CLAP for Youth @ JC; Dean, Faculty of Education, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Professor Alvin Leung is the Dean of Education of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has been involved in training teachers, counsellors, and psychologists over this professional career and has provided numerous services to both government and professional organizations. He received the “Distinguished Contributions to the International Advancement of the Counselling Profession” Award from the Society of Counselling Psychology of APA in 2008, and the “Distinguished Alumni Award” by his alma mater, the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2009 in recognition of his rich accomplishments in research scholarship, contributions to cross-national training, and professional service. In 2011, his co-edited book, “International Handbook of Cross-Cultural Counselling: Cultural Assumptions and Practices Worldwide” received the 2010 Ursula Gielen Book Award from the Division of International Psychology of APA. In 2015, he received the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the International Section of the Division of Counselling Psychology of APA.

CLAP is a mega-project with layers of intervention strategies targeting multiple groups and stakeholders. In keeping up with the breadth of CLAP interventions, it is easy to lose track of the depth and rigor required in accumulating evidence and sharpening good practices. Accordingly, this presentation aims to capture the adventures that CLAP has undertaken to strength the surface and “underground-foundation” of youth career development. First, I would like to define what constitute depth-intensity of an intervention project such as CLAP, including discipline in conceptualization, capacity building, and setting standards. Second, selected research findings are summarized to demonstrate the depth-intensity of interventions across sectors. Third, examples of learning in practice, in capacity development, and in facilitating system enhancement and change are discussed.
